Michael Spyropoulos Design

Michael Spyropoulos is a small, multi-disciplined Seattle area design studio whose work includes identity and graphics, packaging and environmental installations, websites and film, advertising and communications.

I have a strong belief in the power of good design as a business tool — one that can help distinguish a company from its competitors, and lift it out of the swamp of sameness so the impression it makes is trusted, believable, memorable, even irresistible. I also believe that great design is the product of passion, talent, intelligence and — above all — curiosity, and is demonstrated by a diverse portfolio that spans nearly four decades, a wide selection of industries and clients of all sizes.

Lastly, good design requires a great client — one who embraces its importance as a necessary ingredient to success. Design of any measurable impact will never see the light of day without this.

Why the name “Michael Spyropoulos?”

Peter Michael and William Konstantine Spyropoulos — Albanian and Greek immigrants, respectively — emigrated to the United States in the early part of the 20th Century. They came with nothing and made something of themselves in spite of it, paving the way for the three generations that have followed. Integrity, hard work, honesty and determination are the qualities that defined both men, and are those upon which I wanted my studio to rest. It seemed logical, therefore, to place their names on the door, if for no other reason than to provide a daily remind of what is important.

Resumé

I am, at heart, a graphic designer — classically trained at the University of Washington under the Bauhaus design philosophy. After practicing in Portland, Oregon for several years after graduation, the opportunity to work in one of the city’s best advertising agencies was too alluring to ignore, and my career veered from the strict discipline of graphic design into the wilder world of advertising.

I found the exercise of combining pictures, film and words in ways that elicited an emotional response, or motivated someone to act, intoxicating. Much more so than pure design. Looking back on a long career, I’m certain now that part of that was ego driven — the desire to produce work that was more clever than someone else might. Thankfully, the inherent discipline of my design background and the good fortune to work with brilliant writers and planners, provided an overall structure that was and is infused in everything I do. Whatever it is, whomever it’s for, whatever form it takes and no matter who the intended audience, the work must operate within a tightly defined strategic framework. No exceptions.

I ended up working at Foote Cone & Belding/San Francisco during its heyday, when Mike Koelker was the global creative director, which was a blessing of incalculable proportions. Mike’s mantra was “Make it different, make it beautiful.” Words I’ve come to live by…or at least try to. Many more jobs followed over the years that afforded the opportunity to work on global and boutique brands alike. What I realized over those years, is how important good design is to every piece of communication, and that the presentation of them is equally as important as the words and ideas themselves.

“Most readers come away from their reading not with a clear, precise, detailed registration of its contents on their minds, but rather with a vague, misty idea which was formed as much by the pace, the proportions, the music of the writings as by the literal words themselves.”

— Bill Bernbach, Advertising Genius

Design, therefore, has become more important to my work, in spite of a focus on advertising for the majority of my career. Since 2008 I’ve partnered with my wife, Betsy, a brilliant account director, strategist and business manager, under the banner One Degree Brand Chemistry, working primarily on brand identity and website design. There we developed a systematic and streamlined process that consistently delivers strategically sound, unique solutions to the problems of brand identity development and expression.

Most recently, Betsy has adjusted her attention to more fully focus on her teaching position at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business, thus, in keeping with what has been an organic career path, Michael Spyropoulos Design picks up where One Degree left off — process and all. Onward we go.
